Wildfire Smoke and E-Bike Rides: Current AQI or the Daily Forecast?

If the daily air-quality forecast looks better than the current reading, do not average the numbers or pick the more convenient one. Use the forecast to plan, then check current air quality near departure. During wildfire smoke, the difference can be exactly the information that changes your ride.

Check What Each Number Represents

On AirNow, confirm the location, update time, pollutant, and whether you are reading a forecast or current AQI. A report for a different town, or an earlier hour, may not answer the question for your starting point.

A particle-pollution forecast describes expected day-scale conditions. It is not the air quality at the instant you step outside, and it should not automatically be read as the day's peak. AirNow's current AQI uses the NowCast calculation, which combines recent hourly observations. That makes it a current estimate, not a sensor attached to your handlebar.

Suppose the forecast is Moderate but the current particle AQI is Unhealthy. Those labels can coexist without either being a mistake. Reconsider the ride using the current category and the local advisory, rather than treating the earlier forecast as permission to continue.

Match the Activity Advice to the Rider

Use AirNow's Air Quality Guide for Particle Pollution to check both your category and the guidance for the group that applies to you. The advice considers how long and how intensely people are active outdoors, not just whether they are exercising.

For example, at Unhealthy, sensitive groups should avoid long or intense outdoor activity and consider rescheduling or moving it indoors. Others should reduce long or intense activity and take more breaks. At Hazardous, the guidance is to avoid outdoor physical activity for everyone.

Read the guide's group descriptions rather than deciding that feeling fit puts you outside a sensitive group. Follow any health-care advice or established action plan that applies to you. An AQI category cannot provide personal medical clearance.

Recheck Before the Ride Becomes a Commitment

Decide whether to leave later, shorten the outing, choose an indoor alternative, or cancel. A forecast of improvement is a reason to recheck later, not a guarantee that the air will improve on schedule. Consider the return as well as the trip out.

Assistance on electric bikes can reduce pedaling effort, but it does not remove the outdoor exposure. Do not use an easier-feeling ride to disregard the activity guidance.

If symptoms develop, stop the activity and follow appropriate medical guidance rather than trying to finish the mileage. Follow local official instructions, including closures or emergency directions, regardless of an app's number.

Keep weather-related ride planning separate from this check. A charged battery and a dry road do not settle the smoke question. The useful final check is current location, current report, correct pollutant, and the activity advice that applies to you.
