Get the Right E-Bike for the Journey

Some e-bikes are better than others for long distance trips. Before you even embark on your trip, you should make sure you fully understand the advantages and limitations of your e-bike. By limitations I mean how fast it can go, how long the battery (or batteries if you have two) will last and the e-bike’s max distance, whether or not your e-bike is designed to be able to be used off-road (this include the type of tires), and more.

The standard model of MacFox e-bike has a great balance of features that are ideal for long-distance trips. These include having the ability to use two batteries instead of one (both of which are removable), a max speed of 15.5 mph, a range of 32 miles per single full battery charge, durable 20 x 4” tires, and a 500W motor with 65 N.m of torque. And if you use two batteries, the distance gets doubled to 64 miles.

Or you could upgrade to the high-end model of the MacFox e-bike for more power and max range with a 35 mile range per full battery charge (70 miles if using two batteries) and an impressive 750W motor with 80 N.m of torque. Either of these would be an ideal choice if you need an e-bike for long-distance trips.

    Battery Life

Of course, you cannot forget about each battery’s capacity. If you will go on a long distance journey with your e-bike, you don’t necessarily need to have one battery or two batteries together that can last the whole trip without needing to be recharged, but that is preferable. You could also bring one or two extra batteries to replace your empty battery when it runs out. And if your e-bike has the ability to use two batteries at the same time, bringing two spare ones would be even better.

Removing and replacing the battery on your e-bike should be easy if you will choose this method. The last thing you want is to realize that it’s a big hassle to change out the battery after you’re already out of battery power.

Alternatively, you could find a place to stop and recharge your e-bike on the way to your destination. This could be somewhere like a gas-station or even a public park as long as they have an electrical outlet for you to plug in and use.

It may take some time though to charge up your batteries, so consider the fact that you will need to spend time resting there. This could be a good opportunity to eat lunch and enjoy the area on foot a little while your e-bike is charging. But be sure that your e-bike is secure and locked up if you’ll leave it by itself for a while.

You also need to consider that if your e-bike charging takes several hours, this might not be the best option for some scenarios since you might need a full recharge and that could take too long. It could be best to stay the night somewhere and let your e-bike charge for the next day. That brings us to our next tip.

Riding in the Daytime vs Nighttime

During your trip you need to consider what time you're going to arrive at your destination, how long you're going to stay, how many stops you're going to make, and what time you're going to arrive at your next destination or back home.

The main reason that you need to know all of this information in terms of your e-bike trip is that this will let you know how much of the time you will be riding with daylight and how much of the time you will be riding at night.

It is recommended to ride during the daytime because that is safer. That way you will have more visibility in the and other riders and cars on the road will be able to see you more clearly as well. However, if you do decide to ride during the night time, make sure that you have working headlights that are bright enough to light your way and allow you to see the road clearly.

    How Fast You Ride

Pay particular attention to your battery and how it gets affected by the speed you choose to travel at. If you plan to use your e-bike at max speed the whole way, will that drain the battery faster? Most likely it will since this is a common reaction to pushing the e-bike harder. You should take that into consideration when you're trying to figure out how long your battery will last and when you will need to stop to charge it and where.

Bring All of the Supplies You Need

If you're going long-distance e-bike trip will span the course of several days, then you need to make sure you have everything you need for the trip or that you know where you will get the things you need.

For example, if you need to bring food with you because there may not be restaurants in the place that you're going that are open, then you should pack accordingly.

Don't forget all of the essentials including water, a compass, a GPS device which could be your phone as long as you have a way to charge your phone, a jacket or warm clothes, and maybe even a tent if you will be camping.

As long as you pack everything you need, and have the best e-bikes for longer trips and reliable travel routes, you should have a very good trip.
