You set your suspension pressure, remove the pump, then reconnect it to double-check. The gauge reads lower. That does not automatically mean your fork or rear shock leaked while the pump was off. Connecting the pump can change the pressure you're trying to measure.
Why Reconnecting Changes the Reading
When a shock pump connects to a pressurized air spring, air enters the pump hose. The suspension's air now occupies additional space, so the pressure can fall. That lower reading describes the connected system, not the untouched air spring a moment earlier.
A brief hiss when you disconnect can be air escaping from the hose after the suspension valve has closed. Sound alone does not prove a leaking shock seal. Nor does it prove every connection is working properly.
Repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting is not a neutral double-check: each connection can draw more air into the hose. There is no fixed pressure loss that applies to every pump and air chamber.
Check the Connection Before Adding More Air
First, confirm that your suspension actually has an air spring and identify its user-adjustable valve in the model's manual. A coil-spring preload knob is not an air adjustment, and a damper service port is not a place to experiment. Use the compatible shock pump specified for the component.
On an electric bike, switch off the power and support the bike securely. Follow the pump head's connection sequence until it communicates with the air chamber. Don't keep tightening the connector to force a reading; overtightening can damage its seal.
Watch what happens with the bike and pump still. A reading that settles after connection differs from one that keeps falling. Ongoing loss could involve the pump, its connector, the valve, or the suspension; the gauge alone cannot identify which. If a few pump strokes send the reading climbing unusually fast, check the connection rather than assuming that air has reached the spring.
Finish the Setup Instead of Chasing the Gauge
Use the component's prescribed starting pressure and setup sequence, including any air-chamber equalization steps. Those steps vary: do not compress the suspension with the pump attached unless that exact model's instructions call for it. Stay within the component's pressure limit.
Don't add a fixed extra amount just to compensate for an assumed disconnect loss. After setup, remove the pump and check sag as instructed: how far the suspension settles under your riding weight. If you compare the setup later, use the same pump and similar temperature and loading conditions, remembering that reconnection still changes the reading. A stable setup with appropriate sag is different from suspension that keeps losing support.
Persistent hissing, unexplained ongoing pressure loss, or a fork or shock that sinks and will not support you needs inspection before riding. Don't open pressurized parts or keep adding air to mask the problem. Note when the change happens and whether the pump is connected; that distinction helps a technician check the right equipment.
