Another new tube, another flat. Before buying the next one, keep the failed tube and find out where it leaked. A sharp object left in the tire, exposed spoke hole, or repeated installation mistake can damage the replacement too.
The useful clue is not just "the rear wheel again." It is the hole's position relative to the valve, and which side of the tube was damaged.
Keep the Tube's Position Before Taking It Out
With the bike switched off and supported securely, mark the tire beside the valve before disturbing it. As you remove the tube, mark which side faced that marked side of the tire. Avoid flipping or twisting it.
Find and mark the leak. If adding air to locate it, respect the tube maker's off-rim inflation limit, especially with TPU tubes. Do not inflate an unsupported tube to riding pressure.
Lay the tube beside the wheel with its valve at the rim's valve hole, preserving its original orientation. The puncture points toward an area to inspect on the tire or rim. Treat this as an approximate match, not a precise measurement.
Already lost the orientation? Check both possible positions on either side of the valve. If the tire has moved around the rim without a reference mark, inspect the whole tire. Similar-looking holes alone do not establish an exact match.
Let the Hole Point You Toward the Next Check
- Hole facing the tread: Look inside and outside the corresponding tire area for glass, wire, or a thorn. A fragment can remain after the first flat. Use a rag, not bare fingers, to check for sharp debris; nothing snagging does not prove the tire is clear.
- Hole facing the rim: Inspect the rim tape or strip. Look for tears, movement exposing spoke holes, or a spoke end pressing through. Another tube will not repair missing protection.
- Paired cuts: Consider an impact that pinched the tube against the rim. Review pressure and recent impacts within the tire and rim manufacturers' limits. If leakage started immediately after fitting, also check whether the tube was trapped during installation.
- Damage at the valve base: Treat this separately from a small puncture in the tube body. Replace the damaged tube and have the valve fit and any pulling or movement checked.
These patterns narrow the search; they do not prove a cause on their own.
Fix What Damaged the Tube Before Fitting Another
Tube sizes and valve fittings vary across electric bikes. Match the replacement to the tire actually fitted and the rim's valve opening.
Correct the confirmed cause before using a replacement tube or a repair approved for that tube material. A cracked rim, damaged tire casing, or recurring puncture you cannot explain calls for a bike-shop inspection, not another trial ride.
Once that cause is resolved, return to flat-tire prevention for ongoing care. Keep a photo of the marked tube and matching wheel area: it gives the next repairer more to work with than "it keeps going flat."
