Your chain checker says the chain is worn out. Another tool says it is fine. Or the same gauge drops into one section but stops short on another. Which result should you trust?
Don't average them or keep moving the tool until you get a lower reading. First check compatibility and technique, then repeat the measurement on separated sections. A confirmed worn section does not become healthy because another section reads lower.
Make Sure the Numbers Mean the Same Thing
Find the chain's model and check that your gauge supports it. Roller dimensions vary, and a tool that fits between the links is not necessarily compatible. Check the tool's instructions rather than assuming every checker works on every chain.
A drop-in gauge usually tells you whether a marked wear threshold has been reached, not the chain's exact wear percentage. A dial reading or a measurement in millimeters is not directly interchangeable with that pass-or-fail result.
Some gauges also register normal clearance between parts on a new chain. A nonzero reading alone therefore does not prove that a new chain is worn. Don't invent an amount to subtract; use that tool's interpretation instructions. Inspect its measuring tips for bending or damage, especially if someone has forced it into a chain.
Repeat the Check Without Changing the Method
Switch your electric bike off and support it securely. Clear away grime that prevents proper contact. Packed dirt or fresh wax between chain parts can mask wear, so a newly waxed chain's low reading is not reliable proof of good condition.
Match the tool's placement diagram: the hook or pin may need to sit between specific inner or outer plates. Some designs also require you to hold tension on a particular section. Applying that specified tension is different from forcing the measuring tip through resistance.
Keep the chain still while measuring. Remove the gauge and move your fingers clear before advancing the chain by hand, then stop it before checking again. Never use motor power to move the chain during this check.
Use the same tool and method on several separated spans. Record each location and result, then repeat the first location. If it now reads differently, recheck seating, tension, and cleanliness. If one span repeatedly reaches the applicable replacement limit with a valid measurement, don't average that result away.
Use the Reliable Result to Decide What Comes Next

If compatible tools still disagree, have a shop confirm the measurement before treating the chain as serviceable. Don't ride a suspect chain just to wear off wax and try again.
Already skipping, or finding that a new chain won't mesh properly? That needs drivetrain inspection too. A wear reading alone does not prove the cassette needs replacement, and hard pedaling is not a safe way to settle the argument.
