What Does the Key Do on an Electric Bike?
Depending on the model, an e-bike key has one or both of these jobs:
- Battery lock: secures a removable battery to the frame so it cannot be taken off without the key. On many bikes, the same key is used to release the battery for charging indoors.
- Power switch: on some models, turning the key also switches the electrical system on or off. Others use a power button on the display or battery instead.

Can You Ride While Waiting for a Replacement Key?
- If the battery is already on the bike and the bike uses a power button: you can usually keep riding as normal. Avoid removing the battery until the new key arrives, and charge it on the bike if your model allows on-frame charging.
- If the key is needed to switch the bike on: the bike will need the replacement key or a new lock set before the electrical system can be used. You can still pedal, but an e-bike is heavier than a regular bicycle, so short trips are best.
