Gazelle's Ultimate C380+ makes riding easier by giving a pedaling rider precise control over effort. Macfox X1S adds the freedom to use a throttle alongside pedal assistance. Both can make an ordinary trip more comfortable, but one question separates them: do you want to keep a preferred pedal rhythm, or sometimes let the motor take over without pedaling?
What stepless gearing changes on the road
The Ultimate C380+ uses an Enviolo continuously variable hub and Gates belt. Instead of selecting numbered gears, you turn the shifter to make the ratio easier or harder. Approaching a gentle rise, you can make a small adjustment rather than accept the jump between two fixed gears. That is valuable for riders who notice cadence changes and want to keep their legs turning at a comfortable rate.
The belt also removes the routine of lubricating an exposed drive chain. It is a practical benefit if the bike is ridden frequently or parked indoors near clothing and belongings. Tires, brakes, and the rest of the bicycle still need normal care; the advantage is specifically in the drivetrain.
For the summer 2026 refresh, Gazelle specifies a 90Nm Bosch Performance Line Sport motor and 540Wh battery, with pedal assistance up to 28 mph. Earlier C380+ versions use a different 85Nm/500Wh combination. The refreshed model is the one discussed here. Its higher assisted-speed ceiling is useful on suitable stretches where you actually pedal above 20 mph, rather than on a route dominated by intersections.

What X1S changes at frequent stops
The Macfox X1S electric bike pairs a thumb throttle with a single-speed drivetrain. You can use motor power to resume riding without choosing a starting ratio or continuing to turn the pedals. On an outing punctuated by shop stops, crossings, and short breaks, that control can be more relevant than a higher top assisted speed.
Its comfort equipment includes front suspension, a long padded seat, and 20 x 4.0-inch tires. The fork and tires provide cushioning over road joints; the seat gives room to shift your sitting position. The current model also uses hydraulic disc brakes. These are reasons to consider X1S for comfortable everyday riding, alongside its distinctive appearance.
X1S has a conventional chain to clean and lubricate, but no derailleur or multiple rear sprockets to shift across. Gazelle removes chain lubrication with its belt; Macfox removes gear selection with its single-speed setup. Those are two distinct ways to simplify ownership and riding, and neither requires learning an automatic shifting system.
When the Gazelle's extra equipment earns its place
The 2026 C380+ adds a Kiox 500 display with navigation, an adjustable Switch stem, and a suspension fork. For a rider planning unfamiliar routes, the display can make directions easier to keep within view. The adjustable cockpit helps establish a position for sustained pedaling. Together with the stepless drivetrain, those features make sense as a package for someone who enjoys riding actively for much of the journey.
X1S is compelling when you want a comfortable daily e-bike without that level of drivetrain interaction. Its 20 mph assistance, throttle, and long seat support relaxed outings with less attention to shifting. A stop at a shop, a pause to meet someone, and a leisurely ride home all fit that straightforward routine.
The C380+ is worth prioritizing when the ride itself involves steady pedaling, changing gradients, and frequent use of its adjustable gearing. X1S deserves equal consideration when the ability to ease off the pedals, settle into a padded seat, and ride through everyday stops is what makes the bike appealing.
