You hear a hiss around a spoke nipple after setting up a tubeless tire. It is tempting to seal that spot, but the opening you found may only be where the air gets out. The actual failure can be elsewhere under the rim tape or at the valve base. Stop adding pressure before chasing the wrong hole.
The Air Can Travel Inside the Rim
First, confirm that your tire, rim, and valve are approved for use together as a tubeless system. An electric bike with wide tires is not automatically tubeless-compatible. A tire that fits onto a rim does not establish that approval.
On a taped tubeless rim, the tape keeps tire pressure out of the hollow space inside the rim. If air slips past that barrier or the valve's inner seal, it can travel through the cavity and escape around a spoke nipple or another opening. The loudest hiss does not reliably locate the failed seal.
Don't glue over the spoke opening or block a designed drain or vent hole. Tightening the spoke will not restore the tape seal either. Avoid pumping harder to make the leak easier to find, and don't submerge an e-bike wheel to look for bubbles.
If the rim itself starts creaking, cracking, or visibly deforming during inflation, stop and release the air. Do not inflate it again before a qualified mechanic or the wheel maker assesses it.
Inspect the Entire Tape Seal, Not One Spoke
Fully deflate before loosening the valve or opening the tire. If wheel removal or tubeless fitting is unfamiliar, have a shop do this inspection. Otherwise, follow the wheel maker's removal procedure and examine the seal from inside:
- Rim tape: Look around the full circumference for uncovered spoke holes, lifted edges, cuts, wrinkles that leave an air path, and damaged tape near the valve opening. Don't stop at the spoke where you heard air.
- Valve base: Check that its shape suits the rim channel, that the sealing surface is clean, and that the base is not damaged. A split in the surrounding tape also needs repair; tightening the outer nut cannot mend it.
- Rim condition: A crack, damaged valve hole, or suspect joint calls for assessment. Don't hide damage beneath another layer of tape.
Restore the Seal, Then Verify It
Replace failed tape using the wheel maker's preparation method, specified tape width, overlap, and layer count. Replace a damaged valve with a compatible part. Follow its installation instructions rather than reaching for pliers to silence a leak.
Reinstall with the approved tire and sealant, staying within both tire and rim pressure limits. Check bead seating and complete the maker's air-retention checks before riding. A tire that takes air once has not necessarily passed that check.
If air still escapes through the spokes, have the tape, valve seal, and rim examined again. Repeated sealant top-ups are not a substitute for finding the failed barrier.
