If a fender stay comes loose, do not immediately tie it back in place. The stay is the slender rod supporting the fender, and its connection may be designed to separate under load. Park your electric bike and leave it out of use until you know what disconnected and how it should be restored.
Identify the Joint Before Touching It
Find the fender's manufacturer and model, including any markings on the separated connection. An aftermarket fender can use different hardware from the equipment originally supplied with the bike.
Take a photograph showing the whole fender and close-ups of both sides of the separated joint. Compare them with the maker's parts diagram without forcing the pieces together. You are trying to distinguish three situations:
- A recognizable safety release: the parts and connection match the identified release system.
- An ordinary threaded attachment: a conventional bolt or nut has loosened or gone missing.
- Unknown or damaged hardware: the connection cannot be identified, or something is cracked, bent, or absent.
A loose bolt calls for the instructions for that attachment. It does not establish that another joint should be tightened or permanently fastened. If you are unsure which assembly you have, let the fender manufacturer or a bike shop identify it.
A Safety Release Must Still Be Able to Release
SKS's ESC system is one documented example. Its adapter has two interlocking parts that separate under heavy load, releasing the fender stay. This helps prevent a foreign object from dragging the front fender into the tire and blocking the wheel.
Bridging that release with a zip tie, glue, or an extra fastener defeats the reason it can separate. A connection that feels stronger in your hand can therefore remove an intended safety function.
Separation alone does not tell you that every part remains undamaged or that it can simply be pushed back together. Nor does the appearance of a similar plastic joint prove that it is an SKS ESC mechanism. Use the instructions for the identified system, not a reset method from an unrelated fender.
Resolve the Cause, Not Just the Gap
Write down what happened just before the separation. Note any debris, tire contact, bent stay, cracks, or missing pieces you can see without manipulating the wheel. Describe observations rather than deciding that a particular part has failed.
Ask for the correct refitting procedure and any required replacement parts. SKS offers replacement ESC base units, but that does not make those units suitable for a different mounting system.
General fender types and coverage can help if a replacement becomes necessary. First resolve the detached joint: the hardware, damage, tire clearance, and intended release function need checking before the bike returns to use. Bring the photographs and model markings so the person inspecting it can start with the right assembly.
